A Temple Situated on a Deep Forest
Baekryeonsa of Gapyeong
There is a small temple at the foot of Chungryeongsan (Mt.) in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do. It is called Baekryeonsa (Temple). The woodland path lined with large pine trees to get to the temple is great. There are no souvenir shops and restaurants serving Dongdongju (rice wine) and Pajeon (green-onion pancake) in front of the temple, but there is a spacious parking lot that can accommodate tens of cars near Iljumun. After passing Iljumun, we can feel the tranquil atmosphere of the temple. We can see Yongmunsan (Mt.) and Myeongisan (Mt.) from a distance, and there are Wunaksan (Mt.) on the left and Cheonmasan (Mt.) on the right. There are Chungryeongsan and Seorisan (Mt.) to the backside. The temple was named Baekryeongsa, because it looked like a white lotus flower being surrounded by mountains.
The temple does not have a long history, and it holds no national treasure or cultural asset status. It takes less than 20 minutes to look around the temple. There is a high stairway when we pass Iljumun and Yosachae, and the stairs lead us to Daewungjeon. There are Seonbang, Samseonggak and Jijangjeon around Daewungjeon.
The temple was built using a simpler design than an ordinary temple. The buildings of the temple were not decorated with Dancheong (painting), and that creates a cozier atmosphere. The autumn breeze rings a wind bell. Daewungjeon has a simple charm with no special decorations. There is Cham-je-eop-jang-i-jon-bul (12 statues of Buddha who receive and prove the confession of Jungsaeng), which is a unique characteristic of the temple.
The woodland path to the rear is just as great as the temple. Going up the mountain for about 20 minutes, we can reach the Forest of Chungryeongsan, which is one of the eight scenic spots of Gapyeong. There is a 4km forest of big cone pines, providing a great place to take a forest tour. Located between Gapyeong and Namyangju in Gyeonggi-do, Chungryeongsan was designated as the treasure house of botanical resources by botanists. There is a royal azalea forest which is over one hundred years old near the top of Seorisan. The root of the royal azaleas is as thick as a child’s arm and they are taller than adults’ height. We can see the royal azalea blossoms and pick mountain greens such as fatsia shoots and young bracken in the spring.
Baekryeonsa operates diverse devotional services, a Sunday devotional service, a Buddhist College and a Sutras school. The temple also operates weekend programs for devotees. Most notably, it operates a temple stay program, which has gained popularity.
The temple stay at the temple is attractive, in a sense that it is a great family experience. As there are other tourist attractions such as the Garden of Morning Calm and the forest of cone pines near the temple, it is great to have family fun. The temple stay programs include the temple stay experience program, the temple stay program for recreation, the temple stay program for families and the temple stay workshop. The duration of programs vary from two days up to a week.
The temple stay experience program operates every weekend. It is open to everyone, and the program features a walk in the pine cone forest, meditation, study of Zen cult, the education of basic Buddhist ideas, conversation with monks, worship before the image of Buddha sitting in Zen meditation using the right posture and breathing and meals with the traditional Buddhist style, Baru.
The temple stay program for recreation operates during the weekdays. Participants can freely experience life in the temple and take a long look at themselves. Except three worships and regular meals, they can decide freely what to do. The temple stay program for families targets families who visit the temple, while the temple stay workshop targets group tourists.

rput up a tent, make a fire….Feel romance while camping on a fall night Auto camping site in Jaraseom, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi province
The auto-camping site on Jaraseom (Island), Gapyeong, is proud to be the best facility of its kind in Korea. In fall, from the Bukhangang (river) flowing at the side of the campsite, a thick fog rises. To enjoy romance at a campsite in Jaraseom - it cannot get better than this. Author| Photo Choi Gap-su (travel author)
Last year, auto-camping started to lead the domestic travel trend. While the travel industry was damaged by the economic slowdown, sales of camping equipment managed to increase by 70%. In the summer vacation season this year, it was hard to secure weekend bookings at the most popular campsites. But if you didn’t manage to go camping this summer, you still have a chance in September. Actually, September to October is the best season for camping. Veteran campers wait eagerly for this season. The campsites, which are crowded with people in the summer, recover their quietness. Also, you can be free from attacks by mosquitoes and flies. The atmosphere is clear and bright, and the wind is cool. It’s fun to make a fire in the open air in the morning, and the night is fairly good. It is good to enjoy a refreshing time while camping.
If you were to ask me to select a campsite that is ideal for the fall, I would recommend the auto-camping site in Jaraseom, Gapyeong. This campsite, which is located in Jaraseom on the way to Namiseom (island), is where the 2008 IFCC Gapyeong World Camping Caravanning Contest was held. This place was refurnished as an auto camping site for this contest. As there is an abundance of things to see in the surrounding area, including Namiseom, Yongchugyegok (Valley), Achim Goyo Sumokwon (arboretum), etc., this place is very suitable to enjoy a family outing.
The campsite in Jaraseom is considered the best in terms of facilities, along with the Yeoncheon Hantangang (River) auto camping site, the Haenam Ddangggeut auto camping site, and the Donghae Mangsang auto camping site. It is equipped with a mobile home, a log house, a camping trailer, a caravan site where camping cars can be parked, and an auto camping site where tents can be pitched. The auxiliary facilities are excellent as well. The turf square with a width of more than 100 m, the inline skate field, and the fun park are world-class. The one disadvantage is that it lacks shade, but despite this, it is a nice place to enjoy camping in the fall.
The campsite is basically divided into two sections. The first section consists of an auto camping site and a caravan site. The second section consists of a caravan site and a mobile home site. Nowadays, many campers prefer campsites that are equipped with electrical facilities, so if campers want to use a power source, they should use the caravan site. Since a distribution board is installed in each site, it is easy to bring and use electrical devices.
Lee Gyeong-Rak (37), who started auto camping this spring, visited the campsite in Jaraseom twice. A resident of Uiwang, Gyeonggi-do, he goes camping with his family at least twice a month. He said last week he went to the campsite in Hawseong, Gyeonggi-do.
“This spring, I put up a tent for the first time in Sobaeksan (Mt.). I fell in love with stars, which were dense like rice grains scattered in the night sky. I was caught up in camping.” Afterwards, he prepared auto camping equipment such as a tent, living cell (living room type tent), tarp, kitchen system, and went to camping. He said the Jaraseom campsite is the best of the campsites that she has been to so far.
“Last month, I came to the Jaraseom campsite for the first time, and I knew that the facilities were excellent. As there are good spaces where people can ride bikes or go inline skating, children like it. As well, since a restroom and a shower booth are well-installed, my wife seemed not to feel uneasy”.
Even if you don’t have any camping equipment, like a tent, tarp, camp stove, or burner, you can still enjoy camping. You can use a camping caravan or mobile home. If you enter the caravan, you will be surprised at the well-decorated interior. A bunk bed is installed, as well as a clothes chest, shoe chest, etc. Even a sofa, table, sink, and dish drier are installed. The drawers are full of various cooking tools, such as pots and vessels. A shower booth is prepared, and above the bed, there is even an air conditioner. Next to a caravan, there are a wooden table and chairs for about six people, which is enough to produce a camping atmosphere. The mobile home is close to a cottage in size. If you fold the backrest of the sofa in the living room, it changes into a bed. Electric kitchen appliances and a refrigerator, etc., are installed. But while these are convenient, they do take a bit away from the fun of camping.
The real attraction of camping is becoming intimate with strangers easily. In the night, an open-air fire is made in each site (tent site), and the smells of rice cooking smell and meat roasting spread. Familiar murmuring conversations with family are also heard.
“My husband does not help at all with the household chores at home, but here he does all the work.” When Kim Jeong-Hee (37) said this, her children indicated their agreement.
“It is somewhat chilly when the night comes. Tomorrow morning, it seems that water fog will rise on the riverside. I will enjoy taking a walk in the early morning with my children. And on the way home, I will enjoying going Cheongpyeongho (Lake) for a drive.”
As Mr. Lee said this, an open-air fire burned brightly, making pleasant sounds. It was a fall night on the campsite in Jaraseom.

Starry Night – Gapyeong Astronomical observatory Travel Story , gyeonggi-do
This trip is not just about what happens at your destination. It's also about the fun you can have in your surroundings on the way there. Along the Bukhan River, there are lots of galleries, as well as people enjoying themselves around Cheongpyeong Lake. Preparations are in hand for a tournament in progress at Auto Camp on Jara Island, in Gapyeong. It gets cooler when you go into the mountains while it's pretty hot here at over 30℃. As the weather cools, a beautiful range of mountains come into your view.
Get onto the No. 75 road to Mt. Myeongji, and turn left right before Baekdun Bridge. Go through the mountain passage past the arch gate of the mountain village, and you will find the milepost that gives you directions to Gapyeong Astronomical Observatory. Now you lose sight of the children who are entering the Namsong Gallery, and as you penetrate further into the mountain, you can enjoy looking at the flowers dotted here and there past the Sunflower Village. As the passage narrows, it becomes part of nature so and it is difficult to differentiate between the road and the sides of the valley. You are almost at your destination. The astronomical observatory, made of wood, is quite a distinct spot with a swimming pool, restaurants, and new pension-style hotels. The visitors' programs on offer even include one or two nights stay, not to mention a one day visit. So you can enjoy gazing at the stars at night from the swimming pool, which would probably take away all the frustrations you feel riven by.
One night stay camp
After dinner, the program extends from 7:00pm to 10:00pm Having enjoyed looking at the summer stars through the astronomical telescope at the observatory, now is the time to watch a movie. You watch this on the large screen suspended from the ceiling of a chamber whilst you can lie down on a soft couch probably as big as a bed. After watching the movie, a "star instructor" takes you to the world of stars, "the constellation." He tells you that in summer, you can clearly see the Eagle, the Geomungo, the Swan, the Archer and the Scorpion. Looking at the myriad of stars, you can identify the basic star by finding the Great Bear first, since it is easily visible in Korea which is located on the northern hemisphere.
It's quite likely that the spring and summer constellations have gone on vacation since it's summer now. The instructor's stories about stars are pretty riveting so that you might be able to recall them anytime. "As for the spring constellation, the water in the dipper of the Great Bear becomes rain in spring which makes the grass grow, and the spring virgin arrives on the plain and meets the shepherd. The shepherd wears a crown and necktie, and shakes dust off his head (the Berenices Hair) to look attractive to the virgin. Meanwhile, the dog protecting the sheep confronts the lion (the Lion)." The spring constellation is comprised of the Berenices Hair, the Hunting Dogs, the Lion, the Virgin, and the Crow. If the rain hadn't arrived, we could probably have gone out onto the roof to look at more stars.
Taking apart and assembling the telescopes
After the constellation trip and listening to constellation songs, it's time to take apart and assemble telescopes, a maiden experience even for members of the Young Astronauts Korea. I've been to other places but, taking the telescope apart is something that I've never experienced. First the instructor demonstrates the procedure, and then it's our turn to follow. This was the children's favorite activity. After taking apart and assembling the telescopes, the children, working in pairs, begin to take fleeting looks. "Isn't that difficult?" I ask. And the children reply, "It's not difficult at all, and it's rather easy and fun."
Making a luminous constellation board and campfire
The children become calm as they begin to work on the construction of luminous constellation boards using some glue. Turning off the light, the boards start to glow and the children admire them. Their passion free attitude turns into passion itself, with a desire to make theirs superior to any others. The boards can be taken home when the children leave. Around 10 o'clock, they get to enjoy the campfire making wishes to the stars, before calling it a day.
I was very excited as looking at the Shepherd and most shining stars in the sky, reminded me of the novel, "the Star", written by Alphonse Daudet. But it began to rain, dampening my enthusiasm. The weather in the mountains was rather unpredictable. I didn't get to look at many stars because of the rain, but it will add to my precious memories.
Jayeongwa Byeol Cheonmundae(The Astoronomical Observatory)
It is located at the height of 500m on Mt. Myeongji. It has the only Maksutov Astronomical Telescope in Korea, 2 domes, accommodation made from wood from Finland and Austria, along with 330 inch screen facilities. They run substantial programs which allow you to stay there for a few days. You can even observe the stars inside the building, along with observing a variety of comets and making use of the swimming pool.
The world camping tournament
Scheduled from July 25 to August 4, it will be held at Auto Camp on Jara Island.
Jara Island Park has a lot of convenient facilities including a club house, and parking lots wide enough to accommodate a number of mobile houses, caravans, campers. In the section Caravan A-58, there is a white camper. The area has no fences, so it will be great place to spend some time with your friends. The tournament had already taken place 73 times, and it is going to be the 74th this year. About 7,000 people from 33 countries are expected to join the festival.
