Among visitors to Ilsan Lake Park in northern Gyeonggi Province, few will disagree that the place is ideal for daytime leisure.

The nation's largest artificial lake park with a "singing fountain" was ranked as the best jogging and walking course in and around Seoul by the Metropolitan Air Quality Management Office, Thursday.

"The 5.8 kilometer-long path is an excellent place for people to walk, run and do other exercises. Other athletic activities such as marine sports and skateboarding among others are possible, too. It makes the park attractive not only for joggers but families," Sohn Ji-hwan, an office staff member, said.

The office selected 20 jogging courses in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province according to the scenery, their air condition, accessibility by public transport and whether they really fit into the concept of jogging routes.

"We all know that fresh air and a good environment means a lot for good jogging," Sohn said.

Misari Path, Hanam, Gyeonggi Province

Seoul Zoo located in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, grabbed second place. Formerly known as the Grand Park, the zoo has not only animals but also 11.4 kilometers of pathways providing the perfect environment for jogging and walking. Camping sites, art galleries as well as other cultural and leisure sites make the zoo one of the most popular places among Seoulites, the office said.

Gwangnaru between Gangdong Bridge and Olympic Bridge took fourth place. Being the only water resource preservation area in Seoul, there are several ancient housing sites, roller-skating and bicycle routes and playgrounds.

The 661,160-square-meter Green Park in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, placed eighth. A wetland with reeds, an event lounge, exhibition halls and other amenities made the park the most appreciated in Ansan, the management office said.

Efforts to Promote the World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea Reach a Peak

Gyeonggi Province is accelerating its efforts to promote the World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea, which will take place on April 25. The Province aims to actively attract domestic and foreign visitors with tourism products that are customized for domestic and foreign visitors.

The programs to attract visitors are operated by the three cities of Icheon, Gwangju, and Yeoju, and feature diverse tour programs customized for Japanese tourists, families of foreign residents in Korea, Korean tourists, and students. The programs were designed to encourage participation in the World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea while promoting the excellence of the Province???s cultural resources worldwide.

In some programs, which are aimed at Japanese tourists with a high interest in ceramics, Hallyu has been incorporated as a way of increasing interest.

One program, developed in cooperation with Japanese travel agencies, consists of a one-day tour featuring a meal service of Icheon rice and visits to Hwaseonghaenggung, Yeoju Premium Outlet, and the World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea, and a two-day tour that includes visits to the Korean Folk Village, Everland, and the Goguryeo Smiths' Village in Guri.

The program, developed in cooperation with Asiana Airlines, features one-night accommodation at the Icheon Miranda Hotel and visits to famous spots where Hallyu dramas were filmed, Yeoju Premium Outlet, and the World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea.

The programs are gaining considerable popularity in Japan since Gyeonggi Province has been actively promoting them in the Japanese press and which led to coverage by Asahi Simbun.

Programs for Families of Foreign Residents in Korea

Officials from foreign embassies in Korea, representatives of foreign-invested firms, and leaders of the USFK are invited to participate in the programs for families of foreign residents in Korea, which feature tours to three cities.

The Icheon program features a visit to World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea, a luncheon with a pottery class, a kimchi-making experience, and a visit to Seodang, while the Gwangju program features visits to Baekja kiln, Paldang Lake, and Namhansanseong. The Yeoju program has an itinerary that includes visits to Sinreuk Temple, Hwangpo Dotdae, and Moka Museum.

The programs were designed for more than 960 participants from 41 foreign embassies; the chambers of commerce of China, Germany, New Zealand and the US; the US Generals??? Wives Association; the Japanese Women???s Association Group; and international schools for French, Japanese, and Chinese students.

VJ Yoo Seon-yeong

The history of the great empire of Goguryeo that managed a radiant culture and vast land was based on the foundation of strong steel culture.

The history of Goguryeo, when the Han race had occupied the largest amount of land in its history, began in the blacksmith town on the base of Mt. Acha, located in Guri, Gyeonggi Province.

Goguryeo Blacksmith Town

This town is famous as the filming location of the popular MBC drama, Taewangsashingi.

This is a water mill with a diameter of 7 meters. It supplies the blacksmith with water using the water flowing down the roof.

Blacksmith

This is the blacksmith shop. Goguryeo started using steel weaponry early in replacement of bronze weaponry.

The secret key to occupying such a vast empire was in the steel weaponry.

They melt steel minerals with high heat and temper them to produce weapons at the blacksmith shop.

This can be compared to the present systematic production line.

Q-What made you come here??

I was supposed to come here with my friend long ago. So I came with my family.

Q-How is the Blacksmith Town?

It’s a lot better to see and feel it in person rather than just learn it from books.

The people of Goguryeo used a method called Jjokgudeul (partial ondol), compared to the ondol culture of the present.

The jjokgudeul is a method of laying ondol on one side only.

They slept nice and cool during the summer and warm on top of the jjokgudeul during winter. As expected, the wisdom of the people of Goguryeo is fascinating.

The Blacksmith Town of Guri, Gyeong-gi Province, where you can experience the history of Goguryeo in person, not from the letters of history books

If you want to achieve the double purpose of getting away from the summer heat and learning Goguryeo history, why don’t you come to the Goguryeo Blacksmith Town in Guri, Gyeonggi Province?
