Oseong Designated as International Investment Zone

With the designation of Oseong Industrial Complex, located in Oseong-myeon and Cheongbuk-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi Province, as an international investment zone by the Foreign Investment Review Board of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, it is expected that Gyeonggi Province will be attracting more foreign investment.

The Oseong International Investment Zone, which will be established on 362,331㎡ of land, is a region that is in significant demand from international investors due to its geographic advantages and its excellent infrastructure. The zone is 1 kilometer away from the West Coast Highway Cheongbuk IC, and 10 kilometers away from Pyeongtaek port.

874000㎡ of the Hyeongok International Investment Complex, which has been developed on a total plot of 914000㎡adjacent to Oseong Investment Zone, has already been rented. The designation of this new zone is expected to give international investors an opportunity to invest, along with the other international investment zones in Hwaseong and Paju, as well as the remaining area of Hyeonngok, which accounts for just 4 percent (41000㎡).

A spokesperson for Gyeonggi Province reports that the province is already negotiating on investment locations with global companies based in the US and Europe and engaged in the solar and LED industries, as well as with Japanese IT companies. The spokesperson added that the province plans to place an emphasis on attracting cutting-edge investment companies in the field of new energy and the environment, including photovoltaic cells and hydrogen fuel cells, as well as in the IT industry, with the goal of developing the zone into a Mecca of green growth.

For housing in the Oseong Investment Zone, investors can secure a lease on land for a maximum of 50 years, with low rental fees that amount to 1 percent of the annual development costs. In addition, investors will be able to benefit from a variety of aids, such as tax reduction incentives and subsidies for recruitment and job training, measures that are expected to attract more investors.

Oseong Complex is expected to attract investments amounting to more than 300 million dollars, and to lead to the employment of more than 2000 workers.

84 global companies (including the companies that are due to move in) have been operating in 8 units of the international investment complex, boosting the local economy and making Korea more competitive internationally, by attracting USD 1,245 million in investment and creating new jobs for 8,323 people.

Korea Ranked as One of the World’s Largest Beauty Markets

In the wake of the economic crisis, the world beauty market has been hit hard. But Korea seems to be the exception to this rule. Perhaps the best evidence for this is the fact that a large-scale exhibition for the beauty industry will be held in Korea, starting on September 18. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to learn about Korea’s beauty industry, which has been growing in recent years. The 2009 Korea Beauty Design Expo is co-sponsored by Gyeonggi Province, Design Korea and the national assembly forum.

The 2009 Korea Beauty Design Expo will show visitors everything they could possibly wish to know about Korea’s beauty industry. Visitors will be able to view diverse exhibits on products related to hair, skin, makeup, nails, henna and eyelashes, and will also have a chance to actually experience the products. The Expo also provides an opportunity to learn about the situation of Korea’s beauty industry, through various events such as trend presentation and export consulting, and skills demonstrations by people working in the field. In particular, displays of all kinds of cosmetic materials, cosmetic tools, and nail products are expected, including functional cosmetics like herbal cosmetics and natural cosmetics, which will give visitors a chance to see Korea’s cutting-edge cosmetic products and beauty trends.

As president, Phillip Shearer (Clarins Global CEO) has admitted, various companies and groups such as Ben’s Beauty Supply Inc, the US-based NBSDA (National Beauty Supply Dealer’s Association), LA BIOSTHETIQUE from Europe and the Dubai Chamber of Commerce from the Middle East has already confirmed their intention to participate in this fair. In addition, a large number of international buyers will visit to Korea with great interest in Korean products.

At the 2009 Korea Beauty Design Expo, Korea’s beauty products will be showcased, and diverse showcases will be presented, including the Korea hair collection, beauty design contest, graduation presentation, beauty artist performance, and design shows by corporations and associations. About 20,000 people are expected to participate in the beauty design contest, including Korea’s beauty academy, university and high school students, eager to show off their creative designs.

With the main themes of “Beauty Design” and “Jump,” this event will be held at KINTEX, Ilsan, Korea, for 3 days starting on September 18. To learn more, visit www.beaudex.com, the homepage of Korea Beauty Design EXPO.

GTX to be built in Gyeonggi Province

Gyeonggi Province has announced its decision to launch the metropolitan express train project linking Dongtan and Gangnam on April 2, following the approval of the plan to improve traffic conditions in the new towns of Hwaseong and Dongtan by the 64th Metropolitan Area Transportation Council.

Gyeonggi Provincial Government has made great efforts to resolve the chronic traffic problems caused by reckless land reclamation in the southern part of the province. GTX is an example of the province’s efforts, and is regarded by many as an innovative approach to the transportation issue.

The transportation development program for new Dongtan city is the result of constant cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, and will be completed by 2015.

A spokesperson for the province noted that the GTX project, which the provincial government has made a top priority, is expected to be promoted following the final confirmation of the Dongtan-Gangnam express train, adding that if metropolitan transportation facilities such as new transportation and the expansion of the 317th local road are completed, the traffic conditions in Gyeonggi will be significantly improved, enabling drivers in Gyeonggi Province to connect with Seoul as well as the major regions in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province.

I went on a picnic with my family to Toechon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province.

There are several famous restaurants serving noodles, Korean cuisine and spicy fish soups in Toechon, but I never miss a restaurant when I go to Toechon. It is Namgang House located in Bunwon-ri, Namjong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province.

Namgang House of Toechon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province

Although I visited Namgang House in the early morning of a weekend, its parking lot and parking spaces in the riverside were already crowded with visitors of Bunwon-ri. I guess Namgang House is the most popular
spot in Bunwon-ri.

Visitors can enjoy the view of Namhangang (River) beside the riverside parking space in front of Namgang House, and Gyeongan Stream, an effluent from Paldang Lake, flows right in front of Namgang House.

Toechon-myeon is famous as the growing district of tomatoes, but tomatoes are out of season now and has now replaced by potatoes.

The best seats of Namgang House are the window seats, because you can look down on Paldangho (Lake) of Namhangang and enjoy the sweet breeze from Paldangho.

The satellite cities of Seongnam and Hanam in Gyeonggi Province have agreed to merge before local elections in June 2010. Talks had been underway among three cities in the province, Seongnam, Hanam and Gwangju, about a possible merger, but Gwangju dropped out.

In a telephone interview on Monday, Seongnam Mayor Lee Dae-yub (74) said, "We've reached agreement with the city of Hanam on the merger of the two cities. We'll make an official announcement at a press conference on Wednesday."

Hanam Mayor Kim Hwang-sik (59) said "Last month, I proposed to Mayor Lee that Hanam, Seongnam and Gwangju merge to become one metropolitan city for the benefit of residents. I met him again last week and we agreed to seek the merger of Hanam and Seongnam first."

As of the end of 2008, Seongnam, which covers an area of about 142 sq. km, had a population of about 942,000, while Hanam, which measures about 93 sq. km, had a population of about 143,000.

In terms of population size, the resulting new city will rank with Suwon (1.09 million), the largest city in Gyeonggi Province, or Ulsan in the South with its population of 1.1 million. The new city will have a population of more than 1.13 million if residents move into new apartment houses in Pangyo New Town in Seongnam and a Hanam housing project is completed, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government said.

The "Trade Promotion Task Force to India" run by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government and the Gyeonggi Small and Medium Business Center visited India from August 3rd to 6th, with the aim of penetrating the Indian market. Returning to Gyeonggi Province, the task force has achieved significant results, including the signing of contracts worth USD 25 million.

According to an announcement made by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government and the Gyeonggi Small and Medium Business Center on August 11th, 12 companies in Gyeonggi Province, including New Pack Korea (Director: Song Cheol-Jong) took part in the Trade Promotion Task Force to India in order to increase exports to India and open new markets there. The task force visited Mumbai and Bangalore, two of India's leading industrial cities, where they held 156 one-on-one business meetings involving USD 65.6 million in potential business. By the end of the visit, 77 contracts worth USD 24.9 million had been signed.

A spokesperson from the Gyeonggi Provincial Government stated, "The achievements of the Trade Promotion Task Force to India run by the Gyeonggi Provincial Government have resulted in continuous growth thanks to the active participation of companies and the positive response by buyers. To induce additional contracts, the Province will continue to support the work of the Task Force through associated projects, including those related to helping companies with overseas marketing."

He added that the Province plans to actively pursue projects to help SMEs in the province to make inroads into Indian markets so as to maximize the effect of the Korea-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed August 7.
