While other nations cut their boat shows, Gyeonggi enjoys an increased participation for the coming boat show.
161 foreign and 111 domestic participants have registered,
32 more participants, 1000m2 more site year on year.

Fierce competition among the players of ten teams, international and national, during 2009 Korea Match
Cup, May 13th, Jeongok Port, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi.
Gyeonggi International Boat Show Committee announced that as of May 9th, 161 foreign and 111 domestic participants have registered for the Gyeonggi International Boat Show 2009. The annual show opens on June 3rd, at Hwaseong, Gyeonggi and the registration deadline for participation was April 30th. The increased
number of the participants clearly eliminated the pessimistic forecasts that it will be very difficult to attract participants.
In fact, the world ocean leisure industry’s down turn is much worse than known to Koreans. It is said that London Boat Show, one of the world’s four major shows, is canceling the next year’s show and half of the boat manufacturers in New Zealand have closed their business. KOTRA, which was in charge of the promotion for the show, said that Seoul Motor Show suffered a 20% decrease of the exhibition size year on year and American and European Boat Shows also underwent a 10 ~20 % decrease. Gyeonggi International
Boat Show, however, celebrates an increased number of participants and 1000m2 more exhibition site year on year.
Amid the global down turn of the ocean leisure industry, the Middle East and East Asia have risen as the new market for the industry. The Korean market, in particular, is expected to grow to 700 billion won by 2012, thanks to the national income increase and five working days per week which resulted in increased interest on the ocean leisure. It is, therefore, safe to say that the major foreign boat manufacturers have started competitions over the Korean market where the potential demand is high.
A KINTEX authority, in charge of the promotion for domestic participants commented that even the actual number of domestic participants decreased by ten or so, an increase in quality has been noticed. He explained that the participation from the boat& yacht manufacturers and parts companies who have direct interests in the market has increased, compared to many peripheral companies’ participation last year. Some of the participants are said to be exhibiting a boat specifically designed for the show. One participant said that he believes “the show will be a great chance for the industry members to get together and gain acquaintance”, and that “developing such network will be a cornerstone for establishing a committee like Ocean Industry Association, found in many foreign countries.”
