While other nations cut their boat shows, Gyeonggi enjoys an increased participation for the coming boat show.

161 foreign and 111 domestic participants have registered,
32 more participants, 1000m2 more site year on year.

boat show

Fierce competition among the players of ten teams, international and national, during 2009 Korea Match Cup, May 13th, Jeongok Port, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi.

Gyeonggi International Boat Show Committee announced that as of May 9th, 161 foreign and 111 domestic participants have registered for the Gyeonggi International Boat Show 2009. The annual show opens on June 3rd, at Hwaseong, Gyeonggi and the registration deadline for participation was April 30th. The increased
number of the participants clearly eliminated the pessimistic forecasts that it will be very difficult to attract participants.
In fact, the world ocean leisure industry’s down turn is much worse than known to Koreans. It is said that London Boat Show, one of the world’s four major shows, is canceling the next year’s show and half of the boat manufacturers in New Zealand have closed their business. KOTRA, which was in charge of the promotion for the show, said that Seoul Motor Show suffered a 20% decrease of the exhibition size year on year and American and European Boat Shows also underwent a 10 ~20 % decrease. Gyeonggi International
Boat Show, however, celebrates an increased number of participants and 1000m2 more exhibition site year on year.
Amid the global down turn of the ocean leisure industry, the Middle East and East Asia have risen as the new market for the industry. The Korean market, in particular, is expected to grow to 700 billion won by 2012, thanks to the national income increase and five working days per week which resulted in increased interest on the ocean leisure. It is, therefore, safe to say that the major foreign boat manufacturers have started competitions over the Korean market where the potential demand is high.
A KINTEX authority, in charge of the promotion for domestic participants commented that even the actual number of domestic participants decreased by ten or so, an increase in quality has been noticed. He explained that the participation from the boat& yacht manufacturers and parts companies who have direct interests in the market has increased, compared to many peripheral companies’ participation last year. Some of the participants are said to be exhibiting a boat specifically designed for the show. One participant said that he believes “the show will be a great chance for the industry members to get together and gain acquaintance”, and that “developing such network will be a cornerstone for establishing a committee like Ocean Industry Association, found in many foreign countries.”

Detailed Plans Finalized for Construction of GTX

Gyeonggi Province has announced detailed plans for GTX, nicknamed the "Dream Transportation Vehicle," which will enable users to travel from Dongtan to Gangnam in 18 minutes.

Gyeonggi Province hosted a special press conference entitled "GTX, the Transportation Revolution of the Metropolitan Area," which was attended by approximately 150 participants including Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-Soo, journalists for provincial media and representatives of Dongtan residents on April 14, 2009. At the conference, the Province announced the results of a feasibility study that was conducted on the economic efficiency and technological feasibility of GTX, the express train line that Gyeonggi Province plans to build.

The study covered the plan to introduce GTX on routes spanning 145.5km in the metropolitan area. The planned routes consist of three lines: Line A connecting KINTEX and Suseo (Dongtan) with a length of 46.3km (74.8km); Line B connecting Songdo, Incheon, and Cheongnyangni with a length of 49.9km; and Line C connecting Euijeongbu and Geumjeong with a length of 49.3km.

* The figure in parentheses refers to the length of the route, including lines shared with KTX.

The number of the GTX users per day is expected to reach 0.76 million by 2016, and Lines B and C are estimated to have an economic efficiency level of 1.24, proving the feasibility of the plan. The total budget is estimated at KRW 13.9 trillion.

The Korean Society of Transportation listed the expected benefits of the GTX as a decrease of 0.88 million cars on the road per day, an annual CO2 emission reduction of 1.5 million tons, a reduction in energy consumption worth KRW 580 billion, a reduction in annual costs incurred by traffic jams of KRW 700 billion, and the creation of 0.26 million jobs.

The study also covered detailed plans related to GTX, including a plan to introduce domestically developed trains with a maximum speed of 160~200km/h and an average speed of 100km/h, a plan to operate six cars per train, and a plan to run trains at 5.5-minute intervals on Line A connecting KINTEX and Dongtan during rush hours.

Gyeonggi Province has been steadfast in its support for the GTX plan as a means by which to solve transportation issues in the metropolitan area, and formally requested the Korean Society of Transportation to conduct a study on the technical feasibility, economic efficiency, and overall feasibility of the GTX in April of 2008. The Province plans to submit the results of the study to the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs as early as this week.

Gyeonggi Province first proposed the plan to introduce the GTX in the metropolitan area, and many believe that the plan is highly likely to be implemented, as it is currently being actively reviewed by the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs. Gyeonggi Province expects that efforts to implement the plan will be accelerated when the Ministry of Land, Transport,
and Maritime Affairs incorporates the plan in its governmental initiatives.

Gyeonggi Province tentatively named the train GTX (Great Train eXpress) at the conference, and announced that it will be cooperate with the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs and host a design competition.

7th Seoul Motor Show Opens in Northern Suburb (Dong-a Ilbo)

April 3, 2009 (Dong-a Ilbo)

The Seoul Motor Show opened yesterday with a media preview at the KINTEX exhibition center in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.

Utilizing the country's largest motor show as a chance to revive the flagging domestic auto industry, domestic carmakers stepped up efforts to grab visitor attention by displaying their new models and hosting events.

The seventh edition of the show opens today and will run through Sunday next week.

- Co-existence between nature and humans

Reflecting the global emphasis on protecting the environment, participating automakers at home and aboard are displaying their latest eco-friendly vehicles and technologies.

Hyundai Motor unveiled the LPG-electric hybrid Avante LPI Hybrid, the first model of the company's eco-friendly brand Blue Drive.

Blue Drive signifying nature, mobility and drive made its worldwide debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November last year. Along with the LPI hybrid Avante, which will be mass produced from next year, the country's largest automaker unveiled the plug-in hybrid concept car Blue Will (HND-4) slated for mass production in 2012.

Sister company Kia Motors also displayed its eco-friendly models, including three hybrid cars: the LPG hybrid electric compact sedan Forte; the crossover utility vehicle Soul; and the compact sedan Cee'd.

Toyota of Japan, which joined the Seoul Motor Show for the first time, set up a separate zone to display its entire hybrid lineup including the RX450h and the company's flagship hybrid Prius. Honda exhibited its second-generation hybrid Insight and the sport hybrid concept car CR-Z.

GM Daewoo Auto and Technology unveiled its next generation plug-in electric car Chevrolet Volt and the fuel-cell electric vehicle Chevrolet Equinox.

Ssangyong Motor displayed its new diesel hybrid vehicle Kyron.

Car parts makers such as Hankook Tire, Hyundai Mobis, Mando and Halla Climate Control exhibited parts that incorporate state-of-the-art eco-friendly technologies.

- CEOs, union leaders and celebrities join publicity campaigns

CEOs, union leaders and celebrities participated in the event to promote their products.

A successor to the Kia Sorento was unveiled by the company's president Seo Yeong-jong, who was clad in casual attire with a headset, and Kia union leader Kim Jong-seok.

The pop music group Girl's Generation promoted the successor to GM Daewoo's subcompact Matiz. Renault Samsung Motors held a fusion performance of Korean classical music before unveiling its New SM3.

Ford Korea had baseball pitcher Bong Jung-keun, actor Lee Seong-jae and talent Park Yong-ha to promote its Lincoln MKZ and next year's Mustang.

Volkswagen Korea's publicity ambassador Sean and his wife Jeong Hye-yeong held an unveiling event for the Tiguan R-Line.

Kang Cheol-gu, director of the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, said, "Hopefully, the Seoul Motor Show will serve as an opportunity to turn around the lackluster domestic auto industry."
