Lee So-Eun (Anyang, Gyeonggi-do) enjoys weekend excursions. She looks for adventures with friends every weekend. Her favorite destination is a flea market where she can get value prices. She can buy great products at a bargain, and enjoy window shopping. Anyang Public Art Park which is located in downtown Anyang is also one of her favorite destinations. She enjoys the cultural experience of watching artworks in the green setting.

After a walk, she moves to the 1st Avenue of Anyang to take a rest and have snack. While enjoying great meals and shopping, it becomes dark before she knows it.

Pyeongchon Flea Market
Pyeongchon Flea Market is held at Jungang Park, which is located on the opposite side of Anyang City Hall, from the noon to 6:00 P.M. on Saturdays. Tens of thousands of shoppers visit the Market, but only Anyang citizens can sell products. For a stall, provide the resident registration card at the desk on the day when markets are held, and the location of the stall is determined through the lottery system. Here is a tip for shoppers. For wise shopping, look at the style of sellers. If the style of sellers is similar to shoppers, the chances that shoppers will buy the right goods for them will improve. Here is another tip.

Go to the market before noon. The official opening hour of the market is 2:00 p.m., but the sellers start selling their items from 10:00 a.m. The market is already crowded with shoppers at 11:00 a.m. Bring a big bag. Sellers usually do not give shopping bags.

Anyang Public Art Park
Anyang Public Art Park is a new name of Anyang Amusement Park. APAP (Anyang Public Art Project) has been operated every two years since 2005, and a total of 52 pieces of artworks make a perfect harmony with the nature of the Park. While taking a walk along the valley of Gwanaksan (Mt.) and Samseongsan (Mt.), I can see wild flowers in full bloom. It is a great pleasure to see artworks put on the path to the observation deck. Installation art allows viewers to sit on and touch them, unlike artworks displayed in art galleries. The observation deck allows visitors to take a grand view of Anyang Downtown.

Cake Making
After watching great artworks in the nature, I return to the 1st Avenue of Anyang. Tomorrow is the birthday of my best friend. I will surprise her by making her birthday cake by myself. I am not good at cooking and baking but there is no problem. What I need to do is to select the best cake sheet and cover it with cream. The next step is to design my own cake. Toppings cost between 500 won and 1,000 won. There are diverse fruits such as strawberries, pine apple and cherries, as well as jellies. I can also write birthday messages with a chocolate-filled pen.

1st Avenue of Anyang
It becomes dark, and I feel hungry. What about taking a rest and having a great meal? It would be great to have dinner at a Californian role restaurant with the clean open kitchen. It is fun to select roles out of 35 options and looking out of the window. Fresh salad dishes are great appetizers, and roles with fresh toppings please the eyes. Fresh avocado and smoked salmon makes a perfect harmony. On the way home, flat shoes and stylish hats attract my eyes, and summer outfits displayed at show windows catch my eyes. Summer is just around the corner.

A Traditional Market Offering Cultures

Suwon Motgol Market

"Great rice cakes! 2,000 won per pack and 5,000 won for three packs!”
“Anchovies of the South Sea! Great for making soups and fried dishes!”
Each store is packed with vegetables, fruits, fish, dried seafood, side dishes, dumplings, sundae and Korean pancakes. Motgol Market located in Paldal-gu, Suwon, is a unique marketplace with shoppers haggling for prices and sellers giving extra offers.

Shopping at the conventional market is a pleasant experience. Large supermarkets guaranteeing convenient shopping at late night are great, but conventional markets provide the true pleasure of shopping. It is a special experience to haggle for prices at the street packed with shoppers, have an eye to fresh-baked Korean pancakes with perfect smells and try an oil-coated chewy rice cake. Conventional markets are the only place allowing such experiences.

It is great to see conventional markets gaining momentum again after being hit hard by large supermarkets. Shoppers who had preferred clean and convenient shopping places are returning to conventional markets, being tired of heartless urban life. I visited Motgol Market on a sunny weekend. The narrow market street was packed with shoppers. Shoppers’ hands were full of shopping baskets and sellers were adding dynamic atmosphere by drawing customers with cheap and quality products.

Motgol Market is one of the nine small markets of Nammun Market located in Paldalmun, Suwon. The Market consists of 87 stores selling vegetables, fruits, fish, rice cakes and side dishes, creating the atmosphere of a typical town market. The Market was renovated in 1975, but it has been the market since King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty with the history of over 200 years. The Market has set a lot of records. It operated the bargain sale event in 2003 for the first time as a conventional market, and issued the coupon passing current across the Market. It also acquired the certificate of the Clean Market for the first time by rooting out the chronic problem of high-interest personal liability system of conventional markets. 2008 was a big year for the Market, as it was selected for the pilot project for traditional market cultures, “Munjeonseongsi Project,” operated by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism with Jumunjin Market in June of 2008. KRW 1 billion will be invested in the Market by October 2010 to transform the Market into the innovative conventional market combined with cultural experiences and change the paradigm of traditional markets. We can see innovative changes. The representative change is operation of Motgol On Air (Radio Star), the international radio program of the Market. The program is aired at 11:30 AM on every Monday and Thursday, and features stories of Suwon Motgol Market. The program is emceed by three merchants including Mr. Lee Chung-Whan, who sells anchovies, Mr. Kim Seung-Il, who owns a snack house and Mr. Kim Deok-Won. The special and interesting program features personal stories of merchants and plays songs upon requests of merchants. We cannot tune to Radio Star at home. It is the unprecedented exclusive radio program that can be tuned through the market network.

There is an arts organization whose members are merchants. Motgol Jumma Bulpyeong Choir was founded in April 2009. As seen in its name, the choir consists of 15 merchants and 3 local residents, and all the members are Ajumma (married women). The choir makes songs with lyrics written by merchants. The Motgol CM Song with the merchants’ complaints such as “Brokenhearted when you leave after touching my beautiful fruits” and “Why do you ask me a bargain? You have never done that at department stores” is gaining popularity. Motgol Market has transformed itself into the traditional market with cultures and stories by operating Wagle Wagle School, the cultural and arts educational program where merchants and customers learn together, and Siggeul Beokjeok Nanjang, the healthy direct trading system participated by producers, sellers and civil organizations. The renewed atmosphere of the market is recognized by customers. Merchants of the Motgok Market are especially kindhearted and generous. They never refuse to pose for a strange photographer. Merchants with smiles make customers happy. The Mokgol Market with plain and warmhearted people is the ideal place to experience the traditional market culture of Korea.

There used to be many traditional markets when I was a child, but it’s hard to find one these days.

There is a traditional market in Suwon, with lots of things to see and eat, such as ddokboki and sundae.

Let’s take a look around Jidong Market and Yeongdong Market.

Now, if you come towards the South Gate of Suwon, you can see the Suwon Stream. From there, you have Yeongdong Market on your right, and Jidong Market on your left.

Yeongdong Market and Jidong Market are the traditional markets where peddlers have been active since a century ago.

I heard that there is a sundae town in Jidong Market. Let’s take a look around Yeongdong Market first.

Yeongdong Market

As Suwon’s representing traditional market, it has many clothing and miscellaneous stores.

This was a huge market with people coming over from Suwon to Pyeongtaek, Hwaseong and Osan.

Jidong Market is a traditional market specializing in food products, well known as the active field of peddlers.

They sell dried fish, lean meat and seafood here. You can feel warmhearted sentiments of buying, selling and making bargains.

Jidong Market – Sundae Town

Many people come here because there are diverse menus here, with generous servings. They have cow head rice soup, sundae rice soup, stir-fried sundae, sundae, and lots more.

If you come nearby, please drop by Sundae Town.

How was your market excursion today?

You can remember old memories and eat delicious sundae here.

Come to Yeongdong Market and Jidong Market and have the time of your life.
