Jangdan Peninsula – the Nest of Lives

User image

Since the Imjin River rose, earth and sand have built up over a long period and finally made the area of Geogok-ri at Jangdan-myeon, namely Jangdan peninsula. Jangdan peninsula is a triangular low plain area divided into farmland and communities of miscanthus sacchariflorus. In addition, because it is a part of the direct operation area of the military, the admission control is much more severe than any other place in the Mintongseon area.

When passing by the guard post after going through the admission process to enter this area, you can see the scenery of the Imjin River to the left of the road and steep cliffs to the right of the road. Wild flowers blooming here and there in the cliff from spring to autumn grab the visitors’ attention.

The intense shocking pink impatiens textori and impatiens nolitangere L. var. nolitangere communities in summer, chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum and aster ageratoides in small clefts in the cliff in autumn, and splendid wild chrysanthemums in late autumn are all representative of wild flowers in Jangdan peninsula.

Jangdan peninsula is a back marsh formed by the regular flooding of the Imjin River over a long period of time. Since this area has a good natural ecology, the government of Gyeonggi-do once considered establishing an ecological park. Existing puddles and tidal channels display the ecological environments of Jangdan peninsula in detail. However, because the banks have been reinforced and artificial military facilities have been built since the Korean War, Jangdan peninsula has became isolated from the natural floods of the river. Therefore, its functions as a back marsh are gone and this area has since become land; Big communities of miscanthus sacchariflorus have formed and robinia pseudoacacia L. and acer ginnala, etc. stretch their boundaries little by little. The hills located in Noha-ri and Nosang-ri have good indigenous trees and plants such as oak trees, which have recovered since the end of the Korean War. Penthorum chinense pursh is found in nearby puddles, miscanthus sacchariflorus and aragmites communins grow on the edges of the Imjin River.

Jangdan peninsula has become famous as the winter habitat of the cinereous vulture since an NGO has been feeding them. Every winter, Jangdan peninsula is a peaceful resting area for not only the cinereous vulture but also the golden eagle, the white-tailed sea eagle, the red-crowned crane, the white-naped crane, the taiga bean goose, the wild goose, etc.

Recently, there’s been a tendency to use miscanthus sacchariflorus as feedstuff, which seriously damages the beautiful white scenery of miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (Andersson) Rendle flower. Nevertheless, the four seasons of Jangdan peninsula are too beautiful for words. In the early morning in late autumn, the flapping wings of black-faced spoonbills and taiga bean geese over the curtain of wet fog and the silvery mudflats make us feel extremely happy.

There is a small island named ‘Chorok Island’ located downstream where The Imjin River joins with the Han River. The river should be in flood due to the change of water at the crossing point of the Han River and the Imjin River, which reduces piling at the end of the river. However, since high banks have been constructed to protect the Road to Freedom and nearby farmland by preventing the overflow of the river, Chorok Island has been naturally formed. Phacelurus latifolius (Steud.) ohwi seems to be the dominant species in Chorok Island. The confluence with the Sacheon River raises another question: What is there and what kind of birds will visit?

It is the confluence with the Sacheon River which I hope to visit first when Korea is reunified.

Now, Jangdan peninsula is faced with a lot of challenges. It is so worrying that the plans for a high-voltage transmission line to Gaeseong and the Gaeseong express highway are extremely likely to ruin this rich, naturally formed and ancient area. Indeed, in what state will Jangdan peninsula will be to hand over to our descendants? Will it still be a natural ecological space? Or will it be an industrial complex and a base for inter-Korean exchange?

Tongil Village: Inland wetland in Mintongseon

Tongil Village: Inland wetland in Mintongseon

If you go across Tongil grand bridge and go along the national road 1 to Panmunjeom,
You will arrive at Tongil village which is the first settled village in the western Mintongseon (civilian passage restriction line) area. If you go a little more to the north, you will arrive at the Joint Security Area (JSA) where the flying Korean national flag and UN flag are looking down on nearby low mountains and peaceful farmlands.

Tongil village is part of Bakyeon-ri, Jeomwon-ri, and Jungja-ri in Goonnae-myeon and Geogok-ri, Nosang-ri, and Noha-ri in Jangdan-myeon, Paju-si. The village is basically wide, flat, and hilly. The branch of the Sacheon river in the DMZ makes various inland wetlands. It makes mountainous wetland in hilly places along the southern limit line and naturally waved riverine wetlands such as at Sunaecheon in flat places. Many inland wetlands in Tongil village have mostly lost their original functions and became natural wetlands since they have been left for more than 50 years after the Korean War.

Thus, you can easily see where such marshy arbors such as alnus japonica, salix koreensis, acer ginnala, and fraxinus rhynchophylla grow and cyperaceae plants such as paragmites communins, phragmites japonica steud., miscanthus sacchariflorus, and zizania latifolia are grouped. You can also see many hydrophyte plants such as ottelia alismoides, aneilema keisak, utricularia japonica, and trapa japonica in abandoned rice paddy fields or puddles among farmlands.

Since most farmland wetlands are connected with each other through artificially channeled wetland or riverine wetlands, and are associated with nearby estuarine wetland and back marsh, the wetlands in the village are internationally famous as good places for endangered birds. You can see common crane, white-naped crane, white-tailed sea eagles, eagles, common buzzards, upland buzzards, hen harrier, western osprey, merlin, etc. in winter; watercock, lesser cuckoo, Eurasian hobby, Chinese sparrow hawk, broad-billed roller, balck-capped kingfisher, ruddy kingfisher, black-naped oriole, Chinese pond heron, and common kingfisher in summer; and many passage migrants such as the amur falcon, and spotted redshank in spring and autumn.

In addition, many other various species are also observed in this area. For example, mammals such as Chinese water deer, mole, weasel, raccoon, badger, wildcat and many other plants and insects such as spindasis takanosis (Matsumura), black-veined white butterfly, northern dutchmanspipe, and mongolian snakegourd are observed.

However, despite the importance of inland wetlands
for those valuable and various organic resources, Tongil village has been heavily developed since it is located on the shortest route between Seoul and Pyongyang and is the entrance to the Gaeseong industrial complex. With this in mind, the developing plan for South-North relations should be promoted after studying the ecosystem in this area in detail.
