<Osan- Doksanseong Semadaeji>

Doksanseong, Hard-Fought Field in the Joseon Dynasty

At the Semadae three-way intersection in Osan, Gyeonggi-do, turn right and climb a narrow road according to the sign of Doksanseong (Mountain Fortress) Semadaeji, and you will meet the Doksanseong forest bath place, and a road leading up to Bojeoksa (Temple) in opposition to the forest bath place. The Doksanseong is a site where traces remain along the castle wall, and presently there are traces of the castle and four gates

Around when you shed sweats, you will arrive at the peak where you will be able to view the Osan downtown at one sight and also see Dongtan new town.

Doksanseong is a mountain fortress that surrounds Doksan (210 m), where currently only the traces of a castle remain. A castle was built for the purpose of cutting of the intrusion of enemies for a military defense use or as a final fort when a war occurs. Since Doksanseong shoots out in the plain, on it the four directions can be evenly looked around, so that it is advantageous for a strategy. Also Doksanseong was a geographically important pass that cuts off the intrusion into Seoul.

Semadae is the place where General Gwon Yul, who led the sweeping victory at Haengjusanseong during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, won before going to Seoul. Also there is the Bojeoksa for praying a victory within the fortress. Doksanseong, built in the Beakje Dynasty, is the fortress that was used from the Baekje Dynasty, through the Unified Silla Dynasty and the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty, and that was filled with wills and efforts for saving the country of our ancestors including General Gwon Yul.

After looking around entire Doksanseong, return to the starting place and you will enter the gate of liberation to meet Bojeoksa, and climb on the back road of Bojeoksa, and you will meet Semadae Pavilion on the highest site.

In the course of the climbing road up to the Bojeoksa, Doksanseong starts along the gate of liberation of Bojeoksa, and Bojeoksa and Saemadae can be looked around. If you pass the gate of liberation that leads to Bojeoksa next to Doksanseong and Saemadaeji Stone, you will meet the Monk’s residence of Bojeoksa, which leads to the yard where you will see a three-story stone pagoda and the main temple. The period of Bojeoksa construction is not certain, and this temple is known to have been built for praying a victory after Doksanseong was built in the Baekje period.
The name of Bojeoksa originates from a story below: In the Baekjae period, an old married couple who had difficulty in having three meals due to the spring famine and finally had only two does of rice, so they decided to present these does of rice to the Buddhist instead of surviving narrowly. When returning to their home after a memorial service, a miracle occurred that a storehouse was filled with rice. Since the temple was said to have an occult power that gave the couple much treasure when the couple performed a memorial service hard, it was named, ‘Bojeoksa’. I dropped by the temple and had cold water to cool myself. Bojeoksa is also called, ‘Semasa (temple)’.

“Let horses stand on the top! Shower rice on them” Saemadae

Semadae within the Doksanseong is a pole built in the highest place that surrounds the castle and here a military command is given. Just as Seojangdae in Suwon Hwaseong, it is the pole of Doksanseong. Since a horse is bathed with rice, this pole was called ‘Saemadae’ whose name was made after the Chinese character ‘se’ of washing and ‘ma’ of a horse. It is famous for a legend that in order to let it known that water is so much abundant as to wash horses in the peak of rough mountains where there is rare water, General Gwon Yul made a feint of washing horses with rice instead of water so that the Japanese military fell back.

The tablet of Semadae was written by President Rhee Syngman in person. Between the thickened trees near the castle, there is a rest place so that people frequent here, and when you sit on Semadae, you can see the eaves of Bojeoksa but Osan downtown is rarely seen due to the thickened forest. If you cannot understand clearly how the Korean forefather escaped from crisis by washing horses, go to the Haengjusanseong Memorial Museum, then you will be able to see the Doksanseong Fighting Picture. How about following a path through which General Gwon Yul crossed Hangang (River) from Doksanseong and led the military to the Haengjusanseong?

In December, 1592, while General Gwon Yul marched and stationed in order to restore Hanseong, his military was besieged by the Japanese military. Then he blocked up four main castle gates not responding, so the Japanese military waited for running out of edible water and food. Accordingly, General Gwon Yul thought up a good idea in the mid of life and death crisis due to shortage of water and performed the psychological military strategy of sprinkling rice on horses to make this scene appear as if to bathe horse with water, and as a result, he paralyzed the attack of the Japanese military. This fight is known as the Saemadae Fight, and Doksanseong is located in the City of Osan, Gyeonggi-do. <Doksanseong Fighting Picture - Haengjusanseong Memorial Museum>.

One day of Gang Tae-gong, Seorangjeosuji (Reservoir)

User image

There is Semadae in the north where General Gwon Yul repelled the Japanese pirates and Seorangjeosuji (Reservoir) located between the Nojeokbong (Peak) in the south is placed quietly at the street corner from which a idle countryside landscape spreads. If a visitor goes straight around 1 km on the road in the south direction and then turns left, he/she will meet this reservoir. This is a pay reservoir managed by the Seorang Land Control Office, and since it is near the metropolitan area, many people visit here. In the upper stream water grass region, early in spring from March to April, carp and large crucian carps start spawning, and until the end of May around when rice-planting finishes, visitor can enjoy sea grass fishing. The fee for a day is KRW 14,000, and if a visitor uses a water seat, he/she should pay KRW 30,000 additionally. There is a reservoir control office in front of the bus stop next to the reservoir. Villages around the reservoir produce countryside sentiments strongly.

When you go down after viewing Doksanseong bath field, Bojeoksa, Saemadae, Doksanseong, you may feel hungry. There is a restaurant that was well known for chogyetang. If you go to the south along the direction that you entered, you will meet a forked road toward Seorangjeosuji (Reservoir) and Yongjusa (Temple). Turn right in the direction of Yongjusa, go straight around one to two minutes, and right after passing the Seonnyeo-wa-namutggun on the left, next to it, you will meet the Pyeongyang chogyetang house(평양초계탕집), that is rarely seen hidden by trees. Chogyetang is a cool dish cooked by mixing cold cooked chicken and vegetables, and it is by no means inferior for overcoming summer heat.
If you order Chogyetang, beekgimchi topped with thin ice and chicken from which oil was removed are served. While eating a cucumber chicken mixed with seasoning, Bongpyeong buckwheat fried dish is served, and its taste is very excellent. After eating appetizers, Chogyetang is served. After putting Chogyetang in your own plate and having it, and then put Makguksu (noodle) in remaining broth. The broth where ice, vegetable, mustard sauce, and vinegar are harmonious is cool, and Pyeongyang Makguksu as a dessert is cool enough to make summer heat disappear.

1. History of Gyeonggi Province

Gyeonggi Province was a politically important area ever since 18 B.C., when Korea, a homogeneous nation, was divided into three nations during the Period of the Three Kingdoms. Ever since King Onjo, the founder of Baekjae (one of the three kingdoms), had founded the government in Wuirae Castle of Hanam, the Hangang (River) valley was absorbed into Goguryeo in the mid-fifth century, and became Silla's territory in the year 553(14th year of King Jinheung). Afterwards, the current location of Gyeonggi Province, one of the 9 states of Unified Silla (nation unifying the three kingdoms), was called Hansanju.

The Gyeonggi region started to rise as the central region of Korea’s history as the first Emperor of Goryeo (dynasty following Unified Silla), Wanggeon, set up the capital in Gaesong. Since 1018 (9th year of Goryeo’s King Hyeonjong), this area was officially called ‘Gyeonggi.’ In the Joseon Dynasty, which was founded after the Goryeo Dynasty, King Taejo set the capital in Hanyang, while restructuring Gyeonggi’s area to include Gwangju, Suwon, Yeoju, and Anseong, along with the southeast region. Since the period of Kings Taejong and Sejong, The Gyeonggi region became very similar to the current administrative area of Gyeonggi Province. In 1895, the 23-Bu system, which reorganized administrative areas at that time, was put in effect, and the Gyeonggi region was divided into Hanseong-Bu, Incheon-Bu, Chungju-Bu, Gongju-Bu, and Gaesong-Bu.

During Japan’s colonial rule of Korea, Hanseong-Bu was incorporated into Gyeonggi Province on October 1st, 1910, to be renamed as Gyeongseong-Bu, and had a provincial government placed in Gyeongseong-Bu according to the reorganization of administrative districts. After liberation and the foundation of Korea’s government, Gyeonggi Province and its capital Seoul were separated, with partial regions of Gyeonggi Province being incorporated into Seoul hereafter. In 1967, the seat of Gyeonggi provincial government was transferred from Seoul to Suwon. After Incheon was separated from Gyeonggi Province in 1981, Gyeonggi regions such as Gimpo, Ongjin, and Ganghwa were incorporated into Incheon in 1989 and 1995.

2. Geography of Gyeonggi Province

Gyeonggi Province is the western central region of the Korean Peninsula, which is vertically situated in Northeast Asia, and is located between east longitude of 126 and 127, and north latitude of 36 and 38. Its dimension is 10.2% of Korea’s territory, 10.114. It is in contact with 86km of cease-fire line to the north, 413km of coastline to the west, Gangwon Province to the east, Chung-cheong Province to the south, and has Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, situated in its center. The location of its provincial government is Suwon, and situates its 2nd government buildings in Uijeongbu for the administrative conveniences of the northern region.

Climate

The climate of Gyeonggi Province is the continental climate, which has a severe differentiation of temperature between summer and winter, and has distinctions of four seasons. Spring is warm, summer is hot and humid, autumn is cool, and winter is cold and snowy. The annual temperature is between 11~13C°, where the temperature in the mountainous areas to the northeast is lower and the coastal areas to the southwest is higher. For January’s average temperature, the Gyeonggi Bay is -4C°, the Namhangang (River) Basin is -4 ~ -6C°, and the Bukhangang (River) and Imjingang Basins are -6 ~ -8 C°. It becomes colder and higher in temperature differentiation from coastal to inland areas. Summer has a lower local differentiation compared to winter, and since the inland areas are hotter than the Gyeonggi Bay area, the hottest area is Pyeongtaek, making the average temperature of August 26.5C°.

The annual average precipitation is around 1,100mm, with a lot of rainfall. It is rainy in summer and dry during winter. The northeastern inland areas of Bukhangang and the upper stream of Imjingang has a precipitation of 1,300 ~ 1,400mm, whereas the coastal area has only 900mm of precipitation.

2.2 Nature/National Park

The topography of Gyeonggi Province is divided into southern and northern areas by the Han River, which flows from east to west. The area north to the Han River is mainly mountainous, while the southern area is mainly plain.

The configuration of Gyeonggi Province is represented by Dong-go-seo-jeo (high in the east and low in the west), where the Gwangju Mountain Range and the Charyeong Mountain Range spreads from the east and drops in elevation in the west. The fields of Gimpo, Gyeonggi, and Pyeongtaek extend to the west.

Gyeonggi Province boasts a beautiful nature stocked with rivers, lakes, mountains and seas. Its representing rivers are Hangang, Imjingang, and Anseongcheon (Stream), which flows into the Yellow Sea, with Gyeonggi Plain, Yeonbaek Plain and Anseong Plain forming a fertile field area around the rivers. There are Gwangju Mountain Range and Charyeong Mountain Range stretching towards China in Gyeonggi Province. Most of the mountains that rise above 1000m, such as Myeongjisan (1,267m), Gukmangbong (1,168m) and Yongmunsan (1,157m), are included in the Gwangju Mountain Range. It has a developed granite area which, due to the granite’s exfoliation effect, makes it full of strangely shaped cliffs and deep valleys. The Charyeong Mountain Range forms the boundary between Gyeonggi Province and North Chungcheong Province, but is a relatively low-altitude hilly area.

For National Parks within Gyeonggi Province, there is Bukhansan National Park located in Uijeongbu. For Provincial Parks, there are the Chukryeongsan Natural Recreation Area, Namhan-sanseong Provincial Park, Gapyeong Yeoninsan Provincial Park, and Mulhyanggi Arboretum. Besides the listed, the scenery of well-known mountains including Soyosan of Dongducheon City, Yongmunsan of Yangpyeong-gun, and Gwanaksan of Anyang·Gwacheon Cities, along with Hangang and Imjingang are the famous tourism sites of Gyeonggi Province.

3. Population

Gyeonggi Province has shown a rapid increase in population due to the modernization and urbanization of the Republic of Korea. 4. Economy

As the backbone of Seoul in the means of manufacturing complex, Gyeonggi Province is evenly developed in various industries such as heavy industry (electronics, machine, heavy and chemical industry, steel), light industry (textile), and farm, livestock and fisheries industry. Due to the influence of recent high wages, the weight of various manufacturing industries has decreased in Korea’s economy. Gyeonggi Province is also making efforts in many ways to improve and modernize the conventional industry structure. Line #3 is connected to Goyang to the north, while #4 is connected to Gwacheon and Ansan to the southwest, #7 is connected to Uijeongbu to the north and Gwangmyeong to the south, #8 is extended to Sungnam to the south, and finally the Bundang line is connected from Suseo to Bojeong, Yongin, making subway transportation within the metropolitan area extremely convenient. Korean Folk Village

Description
The Korean Folk Village faithfully recreates the lifestyle of the Joseon era (1392-1910) with houses of the aristocratic class and commoners. There are people who actually live here to recreate the customs of the era and impart authenticity to them. Completed in 1974 after two years of construction, the Korean Folk Village was established in order to preserve the nation's cultural assets and introduce traditional Korean culture to both Koreans and foreigners. Dioramas reconstruct contemporary customs, rituals of shamanism, and the different cultures of the "Sa-Nong-Gong-sang," the traditional four classes of society: scholars, farmers, artisans and tradesmen. There are also reconstructions of the traditional building structures including the of homes of farmers and government officers as well as oriental medicine stores. There are daily performances held at the Nori Madang and a market place where you can taste traditional wines and foods.
