Renewable Energy: Maximizing the Strength of Gyeonggi Province
The manufacturing process for the photovoltaic cell is similar to that case of TFT-LCD and semiconductors, industries in which our province has comparative advantages. Moreover, hydrogen energy development, for which 30% of the government’s energy budget is allocated, is led by enterprises in this province. Invest in a future growth engine industry right here in Gyeonggi Province.

Focus on Renewable Energy
Korea ratified the Kyoto protocol and is required to reduce carbon emissions from 2013. The Korean government is concentrating its resources on three strategic renewable energies: solar, fuel cell and wind energy.
Solar Cell Energy
The technological application of semiconductor and TFT-LCD processes to solar cell development positions Gyeonggi Province as a strategic location for the photovoltaic industry. You can take advantage of Gyeonggi's well established IT industrial infrastructure.
Crystalline silicone wafer solar cells: Due to similarities with semiconductor technology and related manufacturing processes, you can untilize Gyeonggi Province’s abundant semiconductor workforce and infrastructure, which is easily transferable to crystalline silicone solar cell manufacturing.
Advantages of Gyeonggi Province
- Commercialized technology currently accounts for more than 90% of the global technology market share in solar cell(in which core governmental energy policy has intensified)
- 82.6% of nationwide semiconductor volume produced in Gyeonggi Province
- Presence of 44.2% domestic semiconductor-related companies as well as 53.9% of employees in the industry
Thin film (amorphous Si) solar cells: Comparable to TFT-LCD technology and related manufacturing processes, the introduction of thin film solar cells has been accelerated.
Advantages of Gyeonggi Province
- Currently the achieving rapid technological advancement, film solar cells are estimated to account for 20% of relevant global technology market share by the year 2020
- Presence of the top 2 global display makers, Samsung and LG.Philips LCD, and their associated display clusters
Hydrogen Energy
Major enterprises developing hydrogen fuel cells and automobiles are present in Gyeonggi.
- Hyundai-Kia, participating in CaFCP (California Fuel Cell Project), has developed a fuel cell bus and aims at commercializing it by 2015. Hyundai-Kia invested USD 60 million in its Environmental Technology Research Center and operates and integrated environment related technology segment; 34 hydrogen vehicles are being tested with 2 hydrogen gas stations.
- Samsung SDI in Suwon City is developing and commercializing portable fuel cells for laptop computers and mobile phones with the cooperation of Samgsung Electronics
Renewable energy-related companies in the metropolitan area
Jusung Engineering (PV equipment), LG Electronics (PV cell), LG Chem (BIPV), Samgsung SDI (R&D in PV cell), Hyundai Heavy Industries (PV cell and module), BOC Gases (F2 gases)
