Railroad / highway project The present conditiont

The connection of railroad (from Seoul to Sinuiju) or highway (from Munsan to Gaeseong) of the Gyeongui line was agreed in the 1st and 2nd South and North Korea Minister-level Meeting (SNKMM) held in July and Aug. respectively right after South and North Summit Conference.

Firstly, government took action to promote railroad/highway connection project effectively. One of them is to organize South and North Korea Railroad Connection Project Group with Ministry of Construction & Transportation as the central figure on 8 Aug. 2000. The railroad and highway connection construction of Gyeongui line started on 18 Sep. 2000. As a result, the railroad was completed at the end of Dec. 2001 and the station building of Mt. Dora, which is the last one of the north, was built on 30 April 2002.

After that, a ground-braking ceremony was conducted in South and North Korea at the same time on 19 Sep. 2002 according to railroad and highway connection of the Gyeongui line and the Donghae line was agreed in the 7th SNKMM held in Aug. 2002.

for the connection project, the first delivery was started from 19 Oct and completed at the end of Oct. 2003.

Government made every effort in order to proceed the construction in a proper way by visiting the site and supporting techniques over 17 times since March 2003. It is estimated that the materials and equipments provided contribute to favorable progress of the construction.

South and North Korea conferred about practical affairs needed for construction each other since a ground-braking ceremony, so that a temporary highway of the Donghae line was opened on 11 Feb. 2003 and it has Mt. Geumgang sightseeing by land conducted.

Especially, it was agreed that South and North Korea Railroad Connection Event would be conducted in the 5th South and North Korea Economy Cooperation Committee held in May 2003. Finally, the connection of the Gyeongui and Donghae line was completed on 14 June 2003, which was separated for half a century.

Although a train has not run yet, it accelerated the connection construction to complete.
