Ten Cities of Gyeonggi Province Host Multi-Cultural Events on Together Day

Diverse events designed to promote multi-cultural experiences and a better understanding of multiculturalism will be held in Gyeonggi Province, in honor of Together Day, which marks its 2nd anniversary in 2009.

Gyeonggi Province accommodates more than 277,900 foreign residents, which is 31.2% of the 891,000 total foreign residents in Korea, and in recognition of this, ten cities in Gyeonggi Province (Ansan, Suwon, Hwaseong, Gimpo, Seongnam, Siheung, Goyang, Euijeongbu, Paju, and Pocheon) will host large-scale events to commemorate Together Day and Multi-Cultural Week (from May 20 to May 26).

Most notably, the events held in the Province do not just provide support for foreign residents in Korea, but also draw the participation of native Koreans. Through these events, it is hoped that many native Koreans will improve their recognition of foreign residents as their true neighbors, through diverse multi-cultural experiences.

Suwon City will host the "Multi-Cultural Family Festival" at Suwon Outdoor Concert Hall 1 in Ingye-dong, Suwon, starting at 10:00 AM on May 17, 2009, and over 5,000 foreign residents are expected to participate in the festival. The Multi-Cultural Bibimbab Making event, where foreign residents and native Koreans will make 2009 servings of Bibimbab, will certainly capture the attention of visitors. The festival will also feature a Korean Food Contest, a Global Cultural Experience, and the Global Cuisine Market.

Ansan City will host the ceremony to declare a Multi-Cultural City at Dalmaji Hall of Ansan Culture and Art Center at 1:00 PM of May 17, 2009, and the Contest for Foreign Residents will take place, in which 15 foreign residents¡? teams will compete with Korean songs and traditional dance skills. The winners of the Contest will present a multi-cultural performance for Together Day at Borderless Street of Wongok-dong from 2:00 PM of May 24, 2009. As Ansan was designated as a Multicultural Special Zone by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy on May 1, 2009, it will host the ceremony to declare itself a Multi-Cultural Town on Together Day.

The Province has provided financial support of KRW 1.5 billion for each city since 2004, in order to support the stable settlement of foreign residents in Korea and protect their rights. The Migrants Welfare Center will be newly launched in Hwaseong, following four centers founded in Namyangju, Suwon, Siheung, and Ansan. The Province plans to gradually increase the number of centers, to keep pace with the increase in the number of foreign residents and the changing conditions of each city and gun.

The Migrants Welfare Center, which was founded by Gyeonggi Province and the City of Hwaseong with an investment of KRW 3.288 billion (provincial support of KRW 1.5 billion) is a three-story building with one basement floor, and operates exhibition rooms, training rooms, a healthcare office, and counseling offices. The Center will support foreign residents in adapting to Korean society by providing Korean language educational services, counseling services, and living support, as well as by hosting cultural and sports events.

May, the Month of Cultural Exchanges with Foreigners

Diverse cultural events for foreign residents will be held in Gyeonggi Province in May.

Most notably, May 20 is Global Citizens' Day, designated in accordance with the Act for the Treatment of Overseas Residents in Korea, and the week starting on May 20 has been designated as Multi-Cultural Week.

In order to commemorate Multi-Cultural Week, each region of Gyeonggi Province will operate diverse events to create a social environment in which people from different backgrounds can live together with shared respect for different cultures and traditions,.

Suwon City plans to host the "Bibimbab-Making Event for Multiculturalism" and the "Korea Cuisine Cooking Contest" on May 17, while Ansan City will host the "Multicultural City Declaration Ceremony" and "Global Folk Performances." On May 23, Hwaseong City will present the ¡°Korean Speech Contest," and Gimpo City will host the "Global Citizens¡? Parade," "Quiz Contest for Foreign Residents," "Traditional Performances of Diverse Ethnic Groups," and other cultural programs on May 24.

Of particular note, Hwaseong City will hold the opening ceremony for the Welfare Center for Foreigners – a three-story, one-basement story building with exhibition halls, healthcare offices, and counseling rooms – at the Baran Industrial Complex in Hyangnam-eup on May 23. The Center is expected to serve as a valuable venue that will enable foreign residents to easily gain familiarity with life in Gyeonggi Province.

In April of 2009, Gyeonggi Province published ¡°The Guidebook for Living in Gyeonggi Province¡± to alleviate inconveniences experienced by foreign residents, provide diverse information and knowledge that will help foreigners interact with local residents, and support foreigner participation in the local communities. The province distributed the guidebook and uploaded it to the website in order to broadly disseminate the material.

In addition, the province has implemented policies to support foreign residents in order to achieve its related goals – including the advancement of a multi-cultural society, the provision of living support for migrant workers, and the support of social adjustment and independence among married immigrants –, under the slogan of "Global Gyeonggi Province with Foreign Residents."

Jeong Suk-Young, director of the Family & Women Policy Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, said, "We will continuously pursue and develop supportive policies to encourage the successful adjustment of foreign residents to their local communities by facilitating their adjustment to their new surroundings, improving their living convenience, and providing diverse support measures to promote their independence."

Girls' Generation Appointed as Ambassadors of Korea International Boat Show 2009

Girls' Generation, the nine-member idol group who has swept the nation with their song "Gee," became ambassadors to promote the marine leisure industry of Gyeonggi Province.
The province appointed Girls' Generation as ambassadors of the Korea International Boat Show 2009 in a ceremony held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Complex in Suwon City on April 29, 2009.

Galbi (Beef Ribs)

Seasoned beef ribs have been famous in Suwon City since 1956, when Hwachunok in Yeongdong Market, a traditional market, began to serve ribs seasoned with natural spices and roasted over a charcoal fire. The ribs are famous for their size and excellent flavor. The secret of Suwon beef ribs is the salt sued to preserve the unique flavor of the meat and produce an unadorned taste.

The greatest reason for the popularity of the ribs is not only the taste but also the ease of eating. Ribs are cut into long pieces and roasted so that diners can enjoy succulent mouthfuls.
