Namyangju General Studio, a blend of dreams, imagination, tradition and trends

Namyangju General Studio
Universal Studios is to America what Namyangju General Studio is to Korea.

Namyangju General Studio

The studio is not only capable of all normal film production operations, but it also operates to educate visitors on the process of film making. It will be a novel experience for children who live in the era of multimedia.

By showing production processes of historic films, animation, action movies and more, the studio offers new opportunities for children to have dreams for their futures.

The Chosun era and the pain of division at the same time…, four realistic outdoor sets:
Namyangju General Studio

The JSA set
The most famous set in the studio spans 8000 pyeong. Construction of it began in October, 1999 and was completed in April, 2000. The Panmoonjeom set was built the same size as the real Panmoonjeom, Panmoongak, Palgakjeong and convention room

What is the JSA?
Called the Joint Security Area, the JSA of the UN army and North Korean troops, it is a special area beyond the authority of both the North and the South.  Trespassing into the other party’s area has been prohibited since the Axe incident on August 18, 1976.

Based on historical research, the Folk Village set is identical to a real traditional village.

There are two folk village sets in the studio.  One of them is an open set that reproduced Jongno and became the background for Chuihwasun which illustrates the biography of Chang Seung-up, the genius painter.  61 buildings (26 tile roofed houses and 35 thatched houses) in total make up noble town, mid-town, a gisaeng house, a store and a tavern. All are used as backgrounds for historical dramas.  In order to enhance the reality, the staff did thorough historical research, moved a clay and stone wall from Chunnam Haenam and installed 500 antique doors gathered from all over the country (backgrounds for Hwangjini, Scandle, Damo, Haesin).

Folk village set 2

This set was built for Detective, the film by Lee Myeong Se.  It revived the marketplace and brothel areas of the Chosun era. It was also used for scenes from the film Eumranseosaeng.

A traditional Korean style house, Woondang

Woondang was a house of nobility in Seoul Jongnogu woonnidong in the late Chosun era. It was reconstructed here in 1994.  It exemplifies a noble’s residence in Seoul and Gyeonggi in the late Chosun era.  It was employed in Man of King, Scandal, and Crisis of Family and Partner.

Feel it, Do it, and Live it.  The Full Movie Experience, The Image Backup Room.

Namyangju General Studio
There is an Image Backup Room for experiences and studios underneath the outdoor sets.  The first and second floors of the Image Experience Room, which children prefer the most, have facilities in which to learn and experience the history and production processes of Korean movies.  Let’s go to the world of the movies.

▲The Movie Culture Room

What you can see in the movie files includes the birth, development, production processes, technical advances, classifications of genres and special effects of motion pictures.

▲The Image Principle Experience Room

Spectators can participate in editing, sound, lighting and makeup

▲The Poly Record Room

Audiences can assemble the sound effects of respiration, horse’s hooves, footsteps and more.

▲What is Poly?

Poly is making sound effects by using the human body and all kinds of instruments.

▲Image Experience Room

Audiences encounter techniques showing how compound scenes are filmed.  Blue screen filming in various ways and the Five-Senses Theater enable you to feel vibrations and scents which make it more interesting.

An additional fee is required for admission to this room and a guide will accompany visitors
(Adult: 2000 won, Children: 1000 won)

Image Miniature Room
The miniature set of the animation movie, Wonderful Days, is on display.  This movie was the first made in Korea using 2D+3D miniature composition techniques.  Production processes of special images are exhibited in stages for standard film-making as well as 3 dimensional movies. All processes are described in detail.

The History of Korean Movies Via Posters
23 large posters of recently released movies and dimensional advertisements are displayed. Pictures of old posters show the history of the Korean film industry.

Hall of Fame
Busts of great movie directors and their legacies are exhibited. The late director, Shin Sang Oak and Yoo Hyun Mok are represented here. The Props Room is located on the first floor and the Cine Theater, located near the entrance, plays preeminent movies to families, at no charge, every week.
