What face do you like? - Gwangju Museum of Face
I wonder how many facial expression we make per day. Already this morning, I have had excited, glad and gloomy expressions. The face is the first thing people see when they each other. Let's go see some faces which show the stories of their lives.
Flowers fell down on the way to Gwangju and Toechon, yellow green leaves turned verdant. At the end of spring, Gwangju, surrounded by mountains and rivers, is warm like a hometown. The curved road along Lake Paldang, makes a fantastic drive. Beyond Namjongmyeon hill, enter the village and you can find a milestone for the Museum of Face. Follow the left side street and you will find the Museum of Face. On stone steps, you can see the graceful Han-ok which has the trace of time upon it. In a courtyard below the Han-ok, are various faces of Seok-in (Stone Statues of Human Beings), faces expressions, varying from comic to serious, welcome you.
Introduction:
The Museum of Face opened in Gwangju-shi Namjongmyeon Bunwon village in 2004. The Museum of Face is the private collection of theater director Kim Jeong-ok. Over the past 40 years, he has collected various "faces" ― stone statues, wooden dolls, and ceramics made in Korea as well as porcelain and glass figurines and masks from abroad. Through the various expressions we see in the faces of the artwork from different countries, we can feel a creative sensation too wonderful for words-one that is created by the artistic sentiment of the artisan and by the passing of time itself.
The Museum of Face, can be described as a place where people of the past have gathered to celebrate festivities. However, theater director Kim Jeong-ok has created a space where people today can mingle and meet those of the past. Hence, the Museum of Face functions both as a museum and as a performance venue.
Sculpture and performing arts are similar in the fact that they both are based on depicting the human body and concentrate on manifesting facial expressions. In that sense, these art genres can be considered as the one of the most "human" art genres.
The Museum of Face is a fusion space in which the performing arts and visual arts can merge.
The collection of Kim Jeong-ok amounts to more than 1,000 pieces and each piece has its own story.
Ancient stone statues, most of which were made for religious purposes, make up about 300 pieces, and there are about 200 wooden figurines.
There are also 50 ceramic and terracotta dolls from various Asian countries including China and Japan, 50 end pieces of roof tiles from Korea and China, and 100 masks. Portraits, which are also depictions of faces, are also an important part of the collection and include shaman paintings as well as works done by modern artists.
The museum plans to increase its collection to include faces of artists and actors as well as self-portraits of artists.
The facial expression you made, waiting for the curator!
While I was waiting for the curator, I laughed at my expressionless face while thinking of what I could ask the curator. I saw the faces of famous writers, players, and movie actors, looking around the inside of the pavilion. The curator said she would be back in 30 min, and she was late. However, the time I have spent alone, sitting on the chair in front of the entrance was peaceful enough. A group of people entered the pavilion. I asked one visitor, who was looking around listening to his guide, where he was from. He replied that he was from the Seoul "Total museum" gallery tour group. After a while, the curator came back and my wait was over.
"What face do you like?" "I like smiling faces, and expressionless faces."
Pavilion changed to stage
The museum is changed to a place for performances and poem recitations as the exhibits are moved. This effort shows the curator's life on stage. She is planning to hold an exhibition of 20c actors' photos. Dance dramas and poetry readings have been held here, and various plays are scheduled too.
"I think it's unnecessary that every museum must be in a systematic order. If you discover and meet beauty among disordered and scattered objects, it would be a kind of pleasure. I would like you to think about and see the object, which borders trash and art, as if it is smiling at you."
I took a look around at the articles on the exhibition while sitting in a corner and smiled. Visitors become a part of the exhibition as well.

The 5th World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea
 Icheon World Ceramic Center
Yeoju World Ceramic Livingware Gallery The World Ceramic Exposition Foundation (WOCEF) was founded for the purpose of pioneering new fronts for ceramic art in the 21st century, as well as providing a basis for the Icheon, Gwangju and Yeoju regions to grow and develop into the centers of the international ceramic community. An important means of such growth would be the World Ceramic Biennale Korea (CEBIKO) that is to be held in Gyeonggi Province on a regular basis.
The World Ceramic Exposition Foundation is also involved in activities and enterprises such as the organization of exhibitions, education, research, marketing and assistance to local ceramic industries for the promotion of world ceramic culture, art and industry.
The World Ceramic Exposition Foundation currently operates Icheon World Ceramic Center, Gwangju Joseon Royal Kiln Museum, and Yeoju World Ceramic Livingware Gallery, museums that house ceramic art exclusively.
The 5th World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea(CEBIKO) International Competition Ceramists from every corner of the world are invited to take part in the 5th World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea (CEBIKO) International Competition. This grand-scale international event participated by the world's finest ceramic artists focuses on defining new values and creative direction for the 21st century ceramic arts. The international competition exhibition, one of the main events of the 5th World Ceramic Biennale Korea, will be held from April 25 to June 21 in 2009, where ceramic artists from across the globe will compete in categories of "Ceramics for Use" and "Ceramics as Expression." The judging panel is comprised of venerated ceramic experts representing each continent, and the winners of the competition will receive the largest cash prize ever conferred (Grand Prize: KRW 60 million, Total: KRW 213 million) to encourage their spirit of creativity and contribute to the development of ceramic arts. We anticipate talented and innovative artists to take part in the 5th CEBIKO International Competition to open a new horizon for the 21st century ceramic arts.

"Fire" is the essential element in sublimating clay into fine art. Fire flames blow life into clay and transform it into the ultimate creation of all arts. Adventures of the Fire symbolically represents the venturous and innovative creations of ceramists who ceaselessly explore the substantial element of ceramics, the fire. The 5th World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea, entitled Adventures of the Fire, will present the new perspectives and future vision of the contemporary ceramic art.◎ By express bus& intercity bus * Located in Seolbong Park in Icheon City, Gyeonggi Province | San 69-1, Gwango-dong, Icheon-si ☏ : +82-31-631-6509 ◎ By airport limousine bus * Gangnam Express Bus : Icheon Bus Terminal (60 min.) 06:30 ~ 21:20 (30 ~ 50 min Interval) ☏ 02-535-4151 * East Seoul Terminal : Icheon Bus Terminal (60 min.) 06:20 ~ 22:40 (15 ~ 20 min Interval) ☏02-446-8000 * Incheon Cross Bus Terminal : Icheon (90 min.) 06:30 ~ 20:00 (60 min Interval) ☏ 032-430-7114 * Seongnam Cross Bus Terminal : Icheon (60 min.) 06:50 ~ 21:00 (30 min Interval) ☏ 031-781-8668 Suwon Cross Bus Terminal : Icheon (60 min.) 06:30 ~ 21:00 (15 min Interval) ☏ 031-267-7800 ◎ By express bus & intercity bus * Incheon International Airport - Gimpo Airport - East Seoul Terminal - Icheon (160 min) 05:10 ~ 19:00 (60 min Interval) ◎ By airport limousine bus * Jungbu Express Way - Exit at Seo- Icheon I.C.
